Hide Buyers Continue to Resist Further Price Increases

Hide buyers are expressing greater resistance to higher prices on several selections. Butt Branded Steers along with Heavy Texas Steers increased $1-$4 today, but the majority of steer and cow selection remained unchanged. Container availability is increasingly becoming more of a market disrupter. Automotive tanners reported less volume of hide order this week than the previous.

For week ending July 29, export sales for 2021 marketing year decreased 28 percent to 314,379 from 439,361 and shipments decreased 27 percent to 399,913 from 550,859. Sales for marketing year 2021 totaled 15,475,850—mostly all hides. The average year-to-date weekly trends for federally inspected slaughter were 639,267, total export sales were 515,862 and total export shipments were 505,494.
