Shipping Rates Continue to Drive a Divergence in Organic Grain Prices

 

Organic turkey slaughter in the United States dipped in the last week of August but remained above 2.5-million pounds per week. The average number of pounds slaughtered during the first 8-months of 2021 is slightly above 2-million, approximately 10% above the same period in 2020. The strong demand for organic ground turkey as a ground beef substitute continues to drive organic turkey demand. At the same time, the trend in organic chicken slaughter has leveled off after rebounding from a lull experienced during April and May 2020, as slaughterhouses closed due to the spread of COVID.
