Rail Rates Rise 8% Year over Year in November

Organic corn prices are elevated on the West Coast. Prices for organic corn range from $475 per short ton to $485. Organic corn prices in some mid-West areas are slightly softer due to the difficulty of finding cargo to move organic corn to the West Coast. Prices range between $9.50-$9.70 in the Western Mid-West. Organic corn prices on the East Coast remain bid near $425 with offers closer to $435-$440 per short ton.

The lack of transportation capacity makes storage more expensive, and prices for deferred organic corn are rising. Merchandisers tell Fastmarkets/The Jacobsen that rail rates on Union Pacific in the secondary market have increased about $2,000 per car. Not only is it costly to get secondary rail, but reserving this rail is also a challenge.
