Cattle Slaughter Continues Below Prior 2-Year Levels

Ten cars of packer BFT and five cars of renderer BFT traded steady today on a Chicago basis. Outside of the tallow market trading was fairly quiet with a number of people en route or in Atlanta for the IPPE show. 

For the week ending January 29th, 2022, cattle slaughter is forecast at 645,000 head, a 1.6 percent decrease from 2021, a 1.4 percent increase from the previous week and a 1.2 percent growth from 2020. According to the USDA Actual Slaughter Under Federal Inspection for January 8th, average live weights are currently at 1,398 pounds, 5 pounds higher than the start of December and three pounds below the respective period for 2021. Over the next six weeks, cattle slaughter is projected to average 631,000 head per week, 0.2 percent lower than the prior six-week average This cattle harvest forecast is 0.4 percent lower than 2021 levels and 0.4 percent under 2020.
