Biodiesel margins rise, but window of opportunity limited
Biodiesel margins continued to rise during the week to Friday November 22. The bean oil/heating oil (BOHO) spread boosted margins by falling to its lowest level since August 27.
According to the Energy Information Agency (EIA), the United States imported 42 million gallons of biomass-based diesel (D4) during January. Imports were 20 percent below December but 6.2 percent above January 2020. Renewable diesel imports exceeded that of biodiesel by 22.8 million gallons. California remains the primary market for renewable diesel in the US. Renewable diesel accounted for 77 percent of total biomass-based diesel imports and biodiesel had 23 percent. Strong economic incentive within California for renewable diesel has been behind the surge in renewable diesel imports.
Renewable diesel imports of 32.4 million gallons were down 12 percent from December but 27 percent above January of 2020. The monthly decline ended a five month run of increasing import activity. Singapore is the only country currently…
