RINs Remain Stubbornly High

 

RINs Consolidate on Lack of Regulator Action

Last week saw little movement in RIN values.  Biodiesel RINs were unchanged for the week, while ethanol RINs slipped by two percent to $1.69 for the 2021 ethanol RIN.  Ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) was also unchanged at $2.08 per gallon, but soybean oil did manage to climb three percent to 63.72 cents per pound.  The move higher in soybean oil lifted the bean oil/heating oil spread (BOHO) six percent to $2.61. 

The BOHO spread reached its highest level in the past 11 trading days but did not provide any follow through for biodiesel RIN values.  The market continues to wait on the 2021 and 2022 renewable volume obligations.  Lack of clarity on what is needed on the blending front has continued to support RIN values.  Some oil companies, like merchant refiner PBF Energy, have put off RIN purchases over the past couple of quarters.  The accumulation of RIN obligations…
