Royal Dutch Shell plc (Shell) recently announced a final investment decision to build an 820,000 metric tons (279 million gallons) per year biofuels facility at the Shell Energy and Chemicals Park Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Upon completion, the facility is expected to be among the largest in Europe to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel made from waste-based feedstocks.
The biofuels facility is expected to become operational in 2024. It will produce low-carbon fuels such as renewable diesel from used cooking oil (UCO), tallow, other fats oils and greases (FOG), as well as agricultural residual products. SAF could make up more than half of the 279 million gallons of production per year. Shell will be able to adjust the renewable diesel/SAF mix to meet customer demand.
