U.S. renewable capacity and the amount of feedstock used in production edged higher during July, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Biodiesel capacity increased two million gallons to 2.43 billion. Ethanol and other biofuel capacity held steady at 17.393 billion and 911 million gallons respectively. Total biofuel operable production capacity was pegged at 20.734 billion gallons, up from 20.732 billion in June.
Feedstock used in the monthly production of biofuel increased three percent to 26.887 billion pounds during July. This was the most feedstock consumed monthly this year. Corn used in ethanol production increased two percent to 25.096 billion pounds, while sorghum use fell nine percent to 32 million pounds.
