New Mexico Senate Passes Clean Fuel Standard

 

Clean Fuel Standard Legislation Moves to New Mexico State House for Consideration

Sen. Mimi Stewart and Rep. Nathan Small Introduced Senate Bill (SB) 14, the New Mexico Clean Fuel Standard Act (CFS), January 18, 2022. SB 14 is a priority bill of Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. The bill passed the Senate on Thursday on a 25-16 vote.  The bill now heads to the state House.  To reach the desk of the Governor, the legislation will have to pass from the House by February 17.  A similar bill passed the Senate last year but failed to pass the House and make it to the Governor’s desk.

If enacted, the CFS would work to cut GHG emissions from transportation fuels 20 percent below 2018 levels by 2030 and 30 percent by 2040. The bill also creates a carbon credit market to help businesses achieve the carbon intensity requirements.  The CFS would be implemented no later than twenty-four months following its effective date. …
