Q1 2023 Biodiesel Imports Reach All-Time High

 

Biodiesel Imports and Exports Grow in March

U.S. biodiesel imports set a new first quarter record of 121.6 million gallons.  Q1 import volume was 119 percent above Q1 2022 volume of 55.5 million gallons, and 99 percent over the previous Q1 record of 61.1 million gallons set in 2017.

Biodiesel imports during March reached a record setting 44.2 million gallons.  March imports were 19 percent above February and 39 percent over the 31.7 million gallons imported during March 2022. Additionally, March biodiesel imports were 123 percent over the prior five-year average of 19.8 million gallons.

Imports arrived from 10 countries in March, with the top four countries of Germany, Canada, Spain, and Brazil supplying 86 percent of the volume. 2023 Biodiesel imports are averaging more than 40 million gallons per month, which is noticeably above the 2022 monthly average of 19.7 million gallons.
