Broiler Slaughter Pushes Up Before Memorial Day Weekend

Values for mid-week were reported as steady from participants. Accounts of thin offering levels were made by the majority. However, lower CME values continued to pressure animal proteins.

For week ending May 13th, 2023, broiler slaughter is anticipated to be 165.073 million head, 1.3 percent above 2022 and 0.5 percent up from the previous week. Over the next six weeks, broiler slaughter is projected to average 165.779 million head per week, up 1.2 percent up from 2022 and 4.4 percent from 2021.

Based on the Weekly Livestock, Poultry, and Grain market highlights from the USDA, year-to-date broiler production as of May 8th was at 13.611 billion head, a 1.5 percent growth over 2022 for the comparable time. Year-to-date turkey production was at 1.631 billion head, a 2.5-percent reduction from 2022 for the similar time.
