Role of Organic Farming in Decarbonization

Organic farming practices have failed to make the agenda in many of the climate related conversations in Washington D.C.  USDA Secretary Vilsack highlighted this at the recent Organic Trade Association (OTA) annual conference.  

Vilsack was concurrently attending the AIM for Climate Summit where he noted organic farming was not on the agenda.  The high-profile conference attracted ag leaders from 50 countries, and he reported that among the attendees were the “largest number of ag ministers in DC ever”. 

Criticism from Organic Stakeholders 

Organic activists lamented the participations of ag chemical companies at the AIM Summit, and a singular focus on regenerative agriculture, a term used by CEOs of multinationals from PepsiCo to Syngenta. There is nothing equivalent to organic to define ‘regenerative’ from a consumer’s perspective, and nothing to define ‘regenerative agriculture’ altogether.
