Canada’s Clean Fuel Standard

The Canadian Clean Fuel Standard (CFS), part of the Clean Fuel Regulations (CFR) under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999, became law in June, 2022. The goal of the CFR is to reduce pollution by making the fuels used cleaner over time.  The CFR requires liquid fossil fuel (gasoline and diesel) suppliers to gradually reduce the carbon intensity of gasoline and diesel used in Canada by approximately 15 percent below 2016 levels by 2030.

The CFR reductions are estimated to deliver up to 26.6 metric tons (Mt) of emission reductions annually by 2030. The Clean Fuel Regulations were registered and came into force June 21, 2022.  The CFR requirements for gasoline and diesel suppliers to gradually begin reducing the carbon intensity of the fuels they produce and sell for use in Canada begin July 1, 2023.
