Organic Corn Trading Slow on Lack of Arbitrage Opportunities

Organic Corn Trading Slow on Lack of Arbitrage Opportunities

Organic grain prices are typically flat during late spring months and this year is no exception. Transactions have slowed, as buying practices adjust to a changing market landscape, prompting an inventory-as-you-go approach.

Some lots trade at sub-$10 levels but larger lots priced below $10 are difficult to find in the Midwest. Those that are long organic corn currently lack the motivation to sell significant volumes below $10/bushel.

High prices in recent years have reshaped organic grain buying practices but other factors are limiting transaction volume.  Elevated transportation costs limit arbitrage opportunities, and this is reflected in recent trade data.
