Holiday Schedules Affect Animal Protein Trade Levels

Following the Fourth of July holiday weekend, participants indicated stagnant pricing for most items, though undertones of firmness have been reported on porcine meat and bonemeal as well as bloodmeal. Porcine bloodmeal, Mo. River, was higher on the day with a top of $1350/st with active demand and tighter offerings present. Porcine meat and bonemeal was indicated at $550/st on the Eastern IA/ILL region but could not be confirmed at time of publication. Several have remained within the previously set ranges $470-540/st, however, the ebb and flow of soybean meal has led to market uncertainty.

For the week ending July 8th, 2023, broiler slaughter is anticipated to be 154.521 million head, up 2.3 percent from 2022 but down 11.9 percent from the previous week (Fig 1). Over the next six weeks, broiler slaughter is projected to average 169.004 million head per week, a rise of 1.5 percent and 3.7 percent compared to 2022 and 2021, individually.
