Broiler Slaughter Below 2022; PBM PFG Supported in Near Term

Values on animal proteins were rangebound for the day. A quiet tone was reported with light volume. 

For the week ending August 19th, 2023, broiler slaughter is forecast at 171.090 million head, less than half a percent above 2022 but 1.5 percent higher from the previous week (Fig 1). Over the next six weeks, broiler slaughter is projected to average 167.483 million head per week, down 1.4 percent from 2022 but up 2.4 percent compared to 2021.

Based on the Weekly Livestock, Poultry, and Grain market highlights from the USDA, year-to-date broiler production as of August 14th was at 24.803 billion head, a 1.0-percent growth over 2022 for the comparable time. Higher weights on broilers in 2023 have led to the spread on slaughter versus production, with year-on-year production up 1.0 percent, while slaughter is 0.7 percent above 2022. Year-to-date turkey production was at 3.020 billion head, up 4.5 percent from 2022 for the similar time.
