EPA Receives One New SRE Petition under RFS

On September 21, the U.S. EPA showed that one new small refinery exemption (SRE) petition had been filed under the Renewable Fuel Standard. The petition was submitted by Placid Refining Company on behalf of its refinery in Port Allen, Louisiana for the 2022 compliance year.

The RFS requires oil refiners to either blend billions of gallons of biofuel into the nation’s fuel mix, or to purchase tradable credits from other blenders or producers. These credits are known as renewable identification numbers, or RINs. The EPA can grant exemptions to refiners that can prove that compliance with the program, including buying RINs, has caused them financial hardship.
