For the week ending October 7th, 2023, hog slaughter is forecasted at 2.550 million head, a 0.7-percent decrease from 2022 and 2.1 percent lower than last week. Over the next six weeks, hog slaughter is expected to average 2.566 million head per week, 4.0 percent above the prior six-week average of 2.467 million head. This average is less than half a percent lower than 2022 and 1.4 percent down from 2021 levels for the respective time.
According to the USDA Actual Slaughter Under Federal Inspection for September 16th, average live weights were at 280 pounds, down six pounds from the respective week in 2022.
