August Biodiesel Imports Rise while Exports Slow

U.S. biodiesel imports reached a five-month high in August and continue to surpass the monthly 2022 import pace. Exports demand was softer in August, falling to a four-month low, but remaining on pace to exceed the record-setting pace of 2022.

Imports through August have reached 314 million gallons, surpassing full-year 2022 imports by more than 30 percent. There were 42.2 million gallons received during August, 33 percent above July and 150 percent over the 16.8 million gallons received during August 2022. Additionally, imports were 247 percent above the five-year August average of 12.2 million gallons.

August imports arrived from five countries, up from four in June. Germany, Canada, and Spain were the top contributors, supplying 79 percent of the volume. Italy and South Korea provided the remaining 21 percent. Biodiesel imports are averaging 39 million gallons per month, noticeably above the 2022 average of 19.7 million gallons.
