Glycerine Market Suggests Slowing Biodiesel Production

New Leaf Biodiesel to Shut Down Operations by End of 2023

The biodiesel operation in the San Diego Barrio Logan neighborhood plans to shut down most of the pls business by the end of the year. New Leaf Biofuel was founded in 2006 with a mission to provide Southern California with environmentally sound fuel. New Leaf had the lowest carbon intensity (CI) rating for biodiesel made from self-rendered used cooking oil, at 8.63 CI. This score gave them a competitive advantage to other producers that had used cooking CI scores ranging from 11.99 to 30.15. The lower the CI score the more valuable the LCFS credit.
Coincidently, the process surrounding the favorable CI may have caused tensions within the community. Residents have been at odds with the company for years, complaining the odors have become a concern, leading some to become sick with headaches, etc..
