Chevron USA, Inc., a subsidiary of U.S-based oil major Chevron Corp., completed the conversion and startup of the existing hydrotreater unit at the El Segundo refinery in southern California to produce renewable fuels, according to a November 7 news release.
The California refinery’s hydrotreater unit was fitted with Chevron Lummus Global LLC’s (CLG) proprietary catalyst and reactor technology and is now capable of flexibly producing diesel fuel from either 100 percent renewable or traditional petroleum feedstocks, the company said. CLG’s ISOTERRA technology is an all-hydroprocessing route designed specifically for converting lipid-rich feedstocks into ASTM-approved renewable diesel, or sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
