Consumers Drive Change in Organic Animal Protein Markets

Consumers are increasingly interested in where their food comes from, aptly illustrated by the estimated $9 billion in local food revenue in 2020, according to the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).  California naturally leads the way in this respect, with $1.4 billion in direct food sales.  Another big organic state, Pennsylvania, takes runner up, with $600 million in annual local food receipts.

There is no breakdown for dollars spent on respective categories, like animal proteins, but Fastmarkets estimates that more than $4 billion of local food dollars are spent on meat, milk, eggs, and processed dairy products.
