Cold Weather Stifles Animal Protein Trade

Another day of light trade for the week with most participants continuing to focus on logistics versus spot trades.

For the week ending January 20, 2024, broiler slaughter is anticipated to be 157.370 million head, 1.7 percent lower than 2023 and 4.6 percent down from the previous week. Over the next six weeks, broiler slaughter is projected to average 163.433 million head per week, 1.6 percent down from 2023. (Fig. 1)

Based on the Weekly Livestock, Poultry, and Grain market highlights from the USDA, year-to-date broiler production as of January 8 was at 860.7 million head, a 2.0-percent drop from 2022 for the comparable time. Year-to-date turkey production was at 200.4 million head, a 2.5 percent growth from 2022 for the similar time.
