Canadian Organic Leaders Seek Parity with U.S.

Canadian organic stakeholders are keen to adopt policy similar to that of the EU, with an ambitious target of converting 25 percent of total farmland area to organic production. Canada’s aspirations are relatively more attainable, with preliminary discussions yielding references to 10 percent. Currently, three percent of Canadian ground is farmed organically. Stakeholders say a specific target is needed.

Last fall, leaders from Canadian Organic Growers (COG), the Canadian Organic Trade Association (COTA), and the Organic Federation of Canada developed an action plan with input from Danish consultant Paul Holmbeck, whose home country leads Europe in proportion of organic foods consumed.
