Biofuel Industry Canola Oil Demand Reaches All-Time High in December

December biomass-based diesel feedstock consumption surged 823 million pounds, reaching a new all-time monthly high of 4.044 billion pounds, according to Energy Information Administration data released today. December feedstock demand was six percent above the previous high of 3.82 billion pounds set in September 2023.

Vegetable oil use in biofuel production increased eight percent to 1.837 billion pounds in December, largely on increased canola oil and distillers’ corn oil demand. Vegetable oil consumption was 131 million pounds over November and 41 percent above December 2022 demand of 1.3 billion pounds. Soybean oil, distillers’ corn oil, and canola oil were the primary vegetable oils consumed during the month. Monthly demand for canola oil reached an all-time high 343 million pounds.
