U.S.Organic Premiums Contrast with Europe’s

While the organic grains markets in Europe continue to face significant headwinds, the organic grain markets in the United States continue to trade at a substantial premium relative to conventional prices. At last week’s Biofach conference in Germany, the mood amongst European organic grain merchants was somber.

There appears to be a concern that European growers will attempt to grow fewer organic grains in the new-crop marketing year due to the collapse in the premium they receive relative to conventional. According to sources, on average, organic grains purchased in Europe received a premium of approximately €20 per metric ton or $22 per metric ton.
