Largest biomass-based diesel imports recorded for the month of January

January biomass-based diesel (BBD) imports reached 85.4 million gallons, down 2% from December 2023 imports of 87.5 million gallons, but 30% above January 2023 imports of 66 million. January imports reached a record high for the month and were the fourth largest monthly amount since July 2017. Biodiesel accounted for 58% of the import total and renewable diesel accounted for 42%.

Biodiesel imports totaled 49.5 million gallons, 14% above December’s import total and 27% above the 30 million gallons imported during January 2023. Renewable diesel imports reached 35.9 million gallons, 19% below December’s volume of 44.2 million gallons but 27% above January 2023’s total of 26.6 million.

Biodiesel imports arrived from Germany, Canada, Spain, Italy, Brazil, and South Korea. Approximately 73% of the monthly volume was supplied by the top three countries, Germany, Canada, and Spain.
