Organic egg producers devote substantial resources to differentiating themselves in the marketplace. In previous commentary we’ve noted the emergence of parallel markets and the accompanying certifications that are the result of a regulatory vacuum in organic markets. 

USDA organic certification initially offered consumers assurances around a narrower scope of issues that were relevant to early organic markets. This federal certification program added consistency across highly fractured markets that were policed by a patchwork of private certifiers.
