Saffire plans cellulosic ethanol, SAF plant in Kansas

Saffire Renewables will break ground on its pilot sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plant in Liberal, in the US state of Kansas, in late 2024, the company announced earlier this month.

The plant will first produce cellulosic ethanol from corn stover, an agricultural residue, which will then be refined into SAF with a very low carbon intensity (CI) score.

The company is hoping to achieve final production capacity for 7 billion gallons per year by 2040. It estimated that the SAF produced will reduce lifecycle carbon emissions by 83% compared with conventional jet fuel.
