Biodiesel margins rise, but window of opportunity limited
Biodiesel margins continued to rise during the week to Friday November 22. The bean oil/heating oil (BOHO) spread boosted margins by falling to its lowest level since August 27.
The US biofuel sector’s use of vegetable oil as a feedstock rebounded in March, according to data released by the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) on Friday May 31.
March domestic vegetable oil use in biofuel production was up by 3.1% month on month to 2.89 billion lbs. The usage for March was still below the record high of 3.35 billion lbs set in December 2023.
Vegetable oil consumption for biomass-based diesel production in March increased by 11.6% month on month to 1.674 billion lbs, up from 1.50 billion lbs in February.
At 1.026 billion lbs, soybean oil was the most heavily used feedstock to produce biomass-based diesel in March. The figure was up by 15.5% from February’s 888 million lbs — the lowest monthly total since December 2022.
