Holiday break drives lower hog slaughter forecast

Trading was quiet on Monday June 17, with no trading reported.

Fastmarkets’ research team forecasts hog slaughter at 2.38 million head in the week to Saturday June 22, down by 0.2% week on week and up 0.3% year on year.

Over the next six weeks, Fastmarkets projects hog slaughter to average 2.29 million head per week, up by 0.1% year on year and down by 2.9% from the prior six-week average.

A big drop is projected for the week ending July 6 due to the mid-week Independence Day holiday on July 4, driving the hog harvest forecast down to 1.98 million head.
