US cattle slaughter continues to trail 2022, 2023 levels

Please note: Fastmarkets will not publish an Animal Proteins bulletin on Wednesday June 19 in observance of the US federal Juneteenth holiday.

The US domestic protein market was quiet on Monday June 17, with no price changes reported.

Soybean meal prices were lower on the Chicago Board of Trade on Monday, with falling July futures giving up nearly all the gains from June 13-14.

The July 4 holiday falls on a Thursday this year, which is disruptive to the fluid intraweek trade dynamics, and it is likely that both buyers and sellers will be looking to put on a longer position this week ahead of the July 4 holiday break to ensure smooth logistics at the beginning of next month.

Fastmarkets’ research team forecasts cattle slaughter at 620,000 head in the week to June 22, down by around 4.5% week on week.
