Cattle slaughter continues to lag 2022, 2023 levels

Six cars of technical tallow traded at 54 cents per lb Chicago on Monday June 24, and separately two cars of edible tallow traded up to 56 cents per lb Chicago.

Both renderer and packer grade bleachable fancy tallow (BFT) were quiet on Monday, although sources continue to suggest that tallow may be quietly trading at higher prices. Trading into the Gulf market was quiet as well, but sources commenting on tallow said “it will take 50 cents [per lb] to get anything done into that market.”

Fastmarkets’ research team forecasts cattle slaughter at 620,000 head for the week to Saturday June 29, down by 4.7% from the same week in 2023 and even with the USDA slaughter estimate for the week ended on Saturday June 22.
