US imports of renewable diesel averaged 30,000 barrels per day (bpd) during the first five months of 2024, up by 29% from the same period in 2023, data from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) released on Tuesday August 6 showed.
Almost all the imports (94%) arrived at the US West Coast, where most of the country’s renewable diesel is consumed. This is because California (Low Carbon Fuel Standard), Oregon and Washington are the only states with clean fuel programs that incentivize the use of renewable diesel.
So far in 2024, 18,000 barrels per day of the 30,000 bpd of imported renewable diesel went to Los Angeles, California, an increase from 2023’s annual average of 13,000 bpd, the agency said.
The remainder of the US renewable diesel imported between January and May went to Perth Amboy, New Jersey and Atlanta, Georgia. All renewable diesel imports came from Neste’s plants in Singapore and Rotterdam.
