The California Air Resources Board (CARB) released first-quarter fuel consumption data regarding the state’s Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS) on July 31, showing that renewable diesel (RD) accounted for 65% of the diesel fuel consumed in January-March 2024, up from its year-end 2023 share of 54%.

Petroleum diesel accounted for 27% of the diesel fuel consumed during the first quarter, down from its year-end 2023 share of 39%. Biodiesel consumption was 8% of the diesel market in the first quarter, up from 7.4% at the end of 2023.

Petroleum diesel only accounted for 1.41 billion gallons of fuel consumption in California during 2023, according to CARB data.

California accounts for nearly all renewable diesel consumed within the United States. The ongoing boom in US RD production and capacity expansion has been due to the success of the LCFS; this success has made RD the dominant diesel fuel in the state.
