US broiler slaughter expected to increase into September; Mid-South feathermeal prices under pressure

US animal protein prices were steady on Wednesday August 28, with light trade volumes reported for the day.

US broiler slaughter
Fastmarkets’ research team forecasts US broiler slaughter at 171.165 million head during the week to Saturday August 31, down by 0.67% from the same period in 2023.

Over the next six weeks, broiler slaughter is expected to average 169.154 million head per week, up by 0.44% year on year, according to Fastmarkets’ research team.

Young chicken slaughter for the week ended August 17 was at 167.503 million head, according to the USDA’s Weekly Poultry Slaughtered Under Federal Inspection report, down by 1.11% from the corresponding week in 2023. Year-to-date broiler slaughter totaled 5.38 billion head, down by 1.77% year on year.
