US animal proteins prices steady; potential port strike could affect stocks, prices, sources say

US animal proteins markets were steady on Wednesday September 18.

Bloodmeal prices were reported to be flat day on day, though market sources continue to indicate underlying pressure, saying that the reintroduction of Saturday kills will increase supply.

A looming port strike by the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), anticipated for October 1 unless an agreement is met, had several market participants concerned due to the effect it could have on stock levels and overall prices.

The ILA covers ports from Maine to Texas, employing thousands of workers under the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX).

“With an ILA membership united, coupled with an army of international dockworker unions ready to join the ILA in their battle against USMX, [ILA] president Harold Daggett is certain that ILA members will achieve a landmark agreement, even if it takes a coast-wide strike beginning October 1 to get it,”
