US fats prices unchanged at start of week; cattle slaughter forecast raised slightly for October

The US fat market was quiet on Monday September 23, with no changes to start the new week.

The Fastmarkets’ research team forecasts cattle slaughter at 610,000 head for the week to Saturday September 28, unchanged week on week but down by 0.3% year on year.

Cattle slaughter finished last week at 610,000 head, down by 1.6% from the previous week and by 2.7% year on year.

The year-to-date total through September 21 was 22.7 million head, down by 4% from 2023.

Over the next six weeks, Fastmarkets’ research team projects cattle slaughter to average 617,500 head per week, down by 1.6% year on year but up by 0.4% from the prior six-week average.
