US animal protein markets quiet amid Hurricane Helene challenges, looming port strike

Trading was quiet in US animal protein markets on Monday September 30, with minimal price changes reported.

Fastmarkets assessed poultry by-product meal pet grade, fob Southeast at $525-600 per short ton on Monday, widening downward from $550-600 per short ton on Friday September 27. Prices were reported below the assessed range for both the Southeast and Mid-South, but they could not be confirmed by the time of publication.

Some market sources in the Southeast said that the effects of Hurricane Helene were limited, while others were experiencing significant challenges due to floods, power losses and logistical limitations.

Sources in the poultry meal market expressed concerns due to the port strike expected to occur as early as Tuesday October 1. Several market participants in the poultry meal sector said they were redirecting shipments to cross-country ports and relying on other contingency plans.
