Organic corn harvest progresses as dry conditions threaten wheat plantings

Persistent dry weather in key crop producing areas has made for efficient corn and soybean harvest.   Scattered showers across the Midwest and Plains last week did not meaningfully slow field work progress, as preceding dry conditions allowed soils to quickly dry while farmers stayed on task.

Dry weather is excellent for productivity this time of year but comes at the expense of organic small grain plantings.  Merchandisers tell Fastmarkets that organic feed wheat supply has rapidly dwindled on the East Coast, sending spot transactions well into the $9 per bushel territory.

Drought in southeast Ohio has intensified, and crop yields there reflect this. Organic producers are seeing yields off by half in some cases where harvest is even practical.
