US organic chicken demand rebounded in 2024

Organic chicken slaughter steadily increased over the course of 2024. Since July, organic chicken slaughter has exceeded seven million pounds weekly for 18 of the 21 weeks.

Much of the weekly organic chicken production in 2023 and H1 2024 exceeded eight million pounds. The subsequent decline coincided with the peak inflation that occurred in June of 2022, when the overall rate reached 9%.

As 2024 progressed, consumers increasingly balked at non-essential food expenses and organic chicken sales dipped.

Major retailers told Fastmarkets that consumers typically retreat to lower price tiers such as naturally raised chicken as organic prices climb. As prices moderate, consumer will gradually make organic chicken a routine purchase.
