Organic market participants remain ambivalent following latest Fed rate cut

The key driver for organic corn and soybean consumption in the US is organic poultry production. As noted in last week’s commentary, organic chicken slaughter has steadily increased over the course of 2024.

The cadence to these organic protein markets was disrupted during the pandemic, and the supply chain chaos that followed set the stage for higher food prices as inflation grew. Organic food sales increased by double digits as lifestyle choices shifted because of extended lockdown.

As inflation swelled and grocery prices spiked, consumers pulled back from their discretionary food purchases, which for many included organic animal proteins. These consumers have been on the sidelines as prices continued to increase and are slowly returning to previous purchasing habits, according to marketplace indicators like organic chicken and turkey slaughter.
