Avian flu spikes in poultry, cattle sector at end of 2024

US animal protein prices were steady on Thursday December 26, with limited volumes reported to have been traded.

US avian flu update
Year-to-date US poultry headcounts affected by highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in 2024 continue to be significantly higher compared with the respective period in 2023, according to the “Confirmed HPAI Detections” webpage by the US Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).

A total of 55.13 million poultry were confirmed to be affected by avian flu as of Tuesday December 24, up by 136.36%, or 32.09 million head, year on year.

The rise in headcount affected by avian flu has been attributed to the quick transmission from bird to bird, which can take less than one day, according to the USDA.
