US bloodmeal price spread widens even with an elevated low end: 2024 recap

US animal protein prices were steady on Monday December 30.

Fastmarkets’ research team forecasts hog slaughter at 2.200 million head in the week to January 4, up by 7.26% from the respective week in 2023.

Hog slaughter was 2.051 million head last week, down by 20.5% year on year, according to the USDA’s Estimated Weekly Meat Production Under Federal Inspection report. Year-to-date hog slaughter was at 128.15 million head, up by 0.6% year on year.

Over the next six weeks, hog slaughter is projected to average 2.525 million head per week, lower by 0.14% year on year.
