EIA raises US renewable diesel output forecast for 2024-25, lowers 2025 biodiesel production outlook

The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) raised its 2024 forecast for the production of renewable diesel (RD) in the US while maintaining its 2024 biodiesel output estimate in its latest Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO) released on Tuesday January 14. The 2025 forecasts showed diverging production, with RD volumes expanding and biodiesel volumes falling.

The EIA currently expects US RD production to have averaged 209,000 barrels per day (bpd) in 2024 and to average 234,000 bpd in 2025. The 2024 production estimate is 2,000 bpd above the December forecast of 207,000 bpd, and the 2025 production forecast is 3,000 bpd above the December estimate of 231,000 bpd.

RD production has been steadily rising each year and is expected to average 253,000 bpd in 2026. This would be 49% above the 2023 average of 170,000 bpd.
