Chicago animal fats and oils market trades higher on strong demand, tight supply

Four cars of packer-grade bleachable fancy tallow (BFT) traded at 49 cents per lb Chicago on Thursday January 23, while four cars of choice white grease (CWG) traded at 46 cents per lb Chicago.

The move in the Chicago market is reflective of overall strength driven by strong demand from the oleochemical, feed and renewable fuel sectors across the US.

“I had a bid for more volume but didn’t have the supply to sell,” sources said regarding the current tight supplies in the US domestic market.

Prices in Chicago are also reflective of the opportunity cost of not selling to the US Gulf market, where CWG has traded on Wednesday and Thursday at 47 cents per lb.

Yellow grease trading was done into the US Gulf market as high as 47 cents per lb on Thursday as well.
