Chicago, Gulf animal fats and oils markets strengthen despite ongoing uncertainty

The US animal fats and oils markets were stable to higher on Tuesday February 4, as Chicago market activity saw a notable uptick throughout the day.

Six railcars of packer-grade bleachable fancy tallow (BFT) traded 3 cents per lb higher at 51 cents per lb, Chicago basis, while renderer BFT saw sizeable volumes trade up by 1.5 cents per lb to 53.5 cents per lb, also Chicago basis.

Additionally, choice white grease (CWG) in the Chicago market moved up to 48 cents per lb, while CWG in the FOB Missouri River market continued to trade at 40-42 cents per lb.

Sources attributed Tuesday’s upward movement to continued tightness in the 30-day market, although uncertainty remains over the outlook for March and beyond.

“I think it’s going to be a wild ride the next few months with tariff and [Producer Tax Credit] uncertainty,” one source said.
