CVR Energy postpones SAF, additional RD capacity plans

CVR Energy is running its one RD plant at 5,000 barrels per day, or 76 million gallons per year, for now, until the company sees final rules on the Clean Fuel Production Credit (CFPC), chief executive officer David Lamp said in an investor call.

“Without the blender tax credit, we believe RIN [renewable identification number] prices and/or low carbon fuel standard credits must increase significantly to compensate,” Lamp said in the call. “If not, a significant amount of biodiesel and renewable diesel production will likely be out of the money and would have to shut in.”

Since January, many stand-alone biodiesel producers have shut in production due to low margins.

US domestic biodiesel production in January fell to 65.6 million gallons, down from a 2024 monthly average of 176.1 million gallons, according to data released on January 20 by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
