MBM market dominated by trade policy uncertainty

Meat and bone meal (MBM) prices were steady in the week to Thursday February 27, in the Australian and New Zealand markets, with many participants absent from the market and negotiating March tenders for domestic trade.

Prices into the Southeast Asian markets were unchanged as well, but the market continues to keep an eye on trade relations between the US and China.

In 2024, the US exported 1.047 million tonnes of inedible meat meal, of which 20% or 208,238 tonnes were destined for China.

Sources in the US interior have not reported any direct retaliatory measures on animal proteins in the form of tariffs, but have said that “inspection issues” may become more common, specifically with plants that have been authorized to export to China, which may find themselves unauthorized on short notice.
