Chinese plant begins producing SAF, RD for export to Europe

China-based Jiaao Enprotech began production at its sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel plant in Lianyungang in Jiangsu province in December, the company told Fastmarkets on Wednesday February 26.

UK-based oil company BP has a 15% stake in the project after investing $49.6 million in August 2024, according to a report by Jiaao Enprotech at the time.

The plant can produce 370,000 tons per year of SAF, or 425,000 tons of renewable diesel, or a combination of the two, a spokesperson for the company said.

The SAF and renewable diesel will be used partly in China, the spokesperson said, but Jiaao’s website said that the SAF will be “primarily exported to the EU.”

The first phase of the plant is operational and will process 500,000 tonnes per year of feedstock, including used cooking oil.
